There is no end to the journey of gardening, as with every new season comes new opportunities for learning. For example, this year we are learning about planting seasons and how to properly care for plants during each stage of their growth. Grow vegetables the traditional way: in the ground! root vegetables need lots of deep, fertile soil and plenty of water to grow successfully; coax them up with a cultivated border around your garden. Radishes, carrots, turnips, beets, and romaine lettuce will keep well without any extra help once they've grown a few inches tall.
Gardening is a great way to get your hands dirty, have some fun and help to feed your family. There are many different types of gardening that you can do, from container gardening to raised bed gardening. Whatever type of gardening you decide to do, make sure that you are using the right tools and supplies for the job. If you are new to gardening, start small by planting a couple of containers or pots with plants that you know will grow well in your climate. As you become more experienced, you can try out more challenging gardens, such as raised beds or vegetable gardens. No matter what type of gardening you choose, be sure to keep a few essential supplies on hand, including a rake, hoe or spade, watering can and fertilizing products. Gardeners also need good sunlight and airflow to function well, so be sure to place your garden where it will receive plenty of both.
Watering plants regularly will help them grow healthy and produce fruit or vegetables. By watering them properly, you can help to prevent them from becoming root-bound and from suffering from drought or waterlogging. Additionally, watering plants regularly helps to keep them clean and prevents buildup of soil on the roots that can inhibit plant growth.
Mulch is a material that is often spread over the ground to help keep soil cool, moist and bug-free. Mulch can also help to absorb water and nutrients from the soil, and can make it easier for plants to grow.
Sweet peas (Cereus) are a longtime garden favorite. They add color and an enjoyable fragrance to your garden. Planting sweet peas in a Cereus patch will provide additional blooms throughout the season.
